  • Be familiar with the SMFM website.
  • Attend the two annual meetings of the Board of Directors (generally held for 2-3 days at the Annual Meeting in late January or early February and in early/mid-July) and three board conference calls.

Financial Expectation
Board members are expected to donate (invest) a minimum of $1,000 per year to the Foundation for SMFM. It is critical that each Board member make their donation to the Foundation. Some may feel that the donations of their time and efforts should count as their “donation.” However, many members as well as high-level donors and others want to see, before they give, that SMFM has “100 percent participation” of its Board, meaning that all Board members contribute financially to the Foundation. Board members should realize that fundraising is a major activity of the SMFM and they are expected to take an active role in fundraising and seeking donations.

Commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
As an organization representative of all maternal-fetal medicine specialists, the SMFM strives to encourage an atmosphere of inclusion. We are committed to promoting diversity and inclusion in all its forms including gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, socioeconomic status, disability, geographic location, practice type, sexual orientation or identity, age, and culture within our membership and especially in our leadership. The Society is committed to establishing programs that support these goals in an effort to build a culture that will attract the best and brightest physicians to our specialty, increase the research being conducted by a diverse population of researchers, foster the best educational exchange, and enhance patient care.
