MI Masks+ for Children Project

To honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. the Michigan Community Service Commission is offering a remote service project to help communities stop the spread of COVID-19 by sewing children and adult size masks. All who request mask to sew, will receive a kit via mail and there is not a financial grant that accompanies this volunteer opportunity.

The MCSC has partnered with Michigan's Applied Textiles Corporation to offer organizations and individuals ready to sew mask kits, which will be mailed directly to the agency or home.  The organization or individual can select organizations to share the masks. Ideally, children attending childcare, before and after school programs, being cared for within foster care, and other support organizations are ideal agencies to share the masks.

Steps to take in designing your project:

Identify Agencies You Will Support:
Identify agencies in your region to distribute the finished masks. Contact them to determine if they are interested in receiving masks.  Get the contact person’s name, direct phone number and email to follow up and confirm the details prior to delivering the items.  If you are not aware of agencies that need masks, the MCSC can assist.

Create the Project Plan:
Mask Kits come in quantities of 100 and 500.  Many sewers have recruited friends, family members and even neighborhoods to sew the masks together. Create a plan to recruit volunteers to sew the masks.  This is a great project to involve youth as volunteers.

Create the Distribution Plan:
Develop a plan to collect the masks from sewers and distribute to organizations. Safety guidelines need to be followed to ensure all involved in the project are safe. Those who are delivering the masks should follow all Center for Disease Control and State of Michigan safety guidelines.

Requests for Masks:
Completed applications to request masks should be received by December 17, 2021. Sewing projects should be held between January 7, 2022 and January 23, 2022.
