Saying "thank you" is not enough

August 6th (4:00-5:00pm PST): Saying thank you is not enough: Cross-cultural differences in gratitude expression In the upcoming paper, Dr. Chen argue that collectivistic cultures are not less grateful but express gratitude differently. Although prior research claims collectivists feel less gratitude because help is “expected” and “unremarkable,” we show this is misleading. The key distinction is between low‑effort verbal thanks (e.g., saying “thank you”) and high‑effort behavioral gratitude (e.g., gifts, reciprocating favors). Across a pilot study and three empirical studies, we find that collectivists prefer high‑effort gratitude, perceive it as more reciprocally sufficient, and respond more positively to it—improving relationship quality and future helping.
