2026 NFDA OSHA Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and Cremation Equipment Survey

Introduction

OSHA is expected to propose updates to its Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) Standard in November 2026. NFDA is gathering information from funeral homes and crematories to better understand current industry practices, identify potential challenges, and provide OSHA with relevant information about cremation operations as it considers changes to the standard.

This survey focuses on how businesses that provide or arrange cremation services currently service and maintain cremation equipment and control hazardous energy. Your responses will help NFDA identify industry practices and potential operational, equipment, training, and cost impacts that may result from changes to the LOTO standard. The information collected will help inform NFDA’s advocacy and engagement with OSHA during the rulemaking process.

Please answer the questions based on your business’s current practices and equipment. If your business operates cremation equipment directly, answer based on that equipment and your facility’s practices. If your business uses a third-party crematory, answer based on what you know about the equipment, servicing, and LOTO practices at the third-party crematory.

Please answer each question to the best of your knowledge. If you are unsure or do not have sufficient information, select “Not sure” where available.
