The Alexandria Environmental Policy Commission and AlexRenew, the public wastewater treatment provider serving Alexandria, are seeking nominations for the 2025 Ellen J. Pickering Environmental Excellence Award. The award honors an Alexandria resident (or group) that demonstrates a commitment to protecting the environment and works to preserve local natural resources. Alexandria City residents, groups, clubs, organizations or corporate neighbors may be nominated.

Nominations reflect environmental advocacy and stewardship that can include but are not limited to protection of natural resources, energy conservation, environmental education and outreach, sustainability, water preservation and conservation, waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and clean air initiatives.

Those making nominations may refer to Alexandria’s Eco-City Charter, adopted in 2008, and the Environmental Action Plan 2040, adopted in 2019. Both documents define the guiding principles of environmental sustainability.

Nomination Period: The Pickering Award Committee will begin accepting nominations on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, and must be received no later than Friday, March 14, 2025.

The Ellen Pickering Environmental Excellence Award will be presented as part of Alexandria's Earth Month activities on Sunday, April 27, 2025 during the Del Ray GardenFest event.

Selection: The selection committee is comprised of representatives from Alexandria Environmental Policy Commission, AlexRenew, and the Pickering family.

Criteria: Nominees for the Ellen Pickering Environmental Excellence Award must reside in the City of Alexandria for individual nominees. Groups, clubs, organizations, or corporate neighbor nominees must operate within the City of Alexandria. All nominees must demonstrate a direct impact on protecting the natural environment and its resources within the City of Alexandria.

  • Nominee Name, Address, Phone Number (include a specific contact when nominating a group).
  • Name, Address, Phone Number of person nominating a candidate.
  • A brief, detailed description (500 words or less) of the nominee’s accomplishments and qualifications.
  • By electing to accept the 2025 Ellen Pickering Environmental Award, the recipient gives permission for AlexRenew and the City of Alexandria to use a photograph of their image for the purposes of promoting the environmental missions of the City of Alexandria and AlexRenew, as well as in promoting the award itself, both online and in print.
  • The award recipient must be available to receive the award at the Del Ray GardenFest on Sunday, April 27, 2025.
