With traffic volumes in the I-26/I-526 corridor expected to significantly increase in the near future, today’s congestion during peak periods is cause for concern for commuters. The Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments and the South Carolina Department of Transportation have made a priority to strategically address existing and future traffic conditions in the Tri-County region by developing a Transportation Demand Management study. This study revealed that to reduce traffic congestion employee-based programs must be implemented. These employee-based programs would focus on educating employees on the benefits of vanpools (similar to carpools but with a larger vehicle and more individuals) and ridesharing. The study also highlighted employer-based recommendations that included coordinating hours and operations of employees in the workplace to stagger shifts, compressing work weeks (shortening the work week while increasing the work hours for each day), promoting telecommuting and encouraging off-peak travel. Survey results will help analyze the willingness to make behavior changes in regards to the way commuters think about travel.
