Introduction

Corridor care has been identified as a major healthcare crisis by multiple medical organisations, with recently released figures from England alone showing that, on average, over 3,000 patients experience corridor care a day. This survey aims to highlight your experience in hospitals dealing with this crisis, and will help ensure that the BMA can continue to pressure the Government to end corridor care across the UK.

Despite what the name may suggest, corridor care encompasses a whole range of instances where care is delivered in unsuitable areas, including in waiting rooms, ambulances on the forecourt of EDs (emergency departments), repurposed cupboards and more. For example, NHS England recently released guidance of corridor care for both EDs as well as general and acute beds which underscores this, defining the term as follows:

The term ‘corridor care’ is inclusive of any non-designated clinical space. Corridor care does not include clinical spaces opened as part of winter pressure planning and refers to care given in any unplanned setting.
