SMFM Global Health Committee Abstract Mentor Volunteer

The SMFM Global Health Committee is working to improve communication and dissemination of obstetric research done by investigators from low- and middle-income countries by leveraging the expertise of SMFM members invested in mentoring. Volunteer mentors will pre-review up to 5 abstracts from individuals planning to submit to SMFM’s 2027 Pregnancy Meeting, with a goal of providing feedback to strengthen abstracts prior to final meeting submission.

Volunteer mentors will receive abstracts via email in PDF or Word format by September 1, 2026. Mentors will provide tracked changes and/or written feedback regarding the abstract’s format, study design, analytical methods, and communication of results within 7 days, allowing the mentee time for revisions prior to submission. Further engagement, including review of revisions or a virtual meeting, are optional.
  • Mentors will volunteer to pre-review up to 5 abstracts as submitted by authors desiring mentorship. Abstracts will arrive via email in Microsoft Word or PDF format.
  • Review will focus on clearly stated objectives, adequately communicated study design, suitably summarized results, and appropriate conclusions.
  • Study design review will evaluate for critical characteristics of appropriately described study design, including study type, eligibility and exclusion criteria, strategies to address bias, power considerations, and statistical analysis plan.
  • Mentors will send their abstract feedback via email. Mentors will have 7 days from the time they receive an abstract until the review is due for return to the mentee.
  • Mentors may be asked by mentees to review revisions to the abstract.
  • Mentors and mentees may choose to have remote meetings about the abstract.
  • Abstract pre-review is not grounds for authorship.
  • The expected commitment of the mentor is through one SMFM meeting cycle, though continued volunteering is welcome if the mentor and GHC agree. Those unable to fulfill their commitment will notify the GHC as soon as they are able to allow arranging for alternate mentors.
  • If the mentor serves as an SMFM abstract reviewer, recusal from formally reviewing abstracts on which that person has served as an abstract mentor is expected.
