Grant Overview
The Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) is offering grants for Global Youth Service Day projects ranging from $100-$1,000. The volunteer projects should be created and implemented by youth in response to community needs. Eligible organizations include nonprofits, faith-based organizations, municipalities, schools and universities.  There is not a match requirement for this grant, but additional sponsors are encouraged.

Youth Volunteer Movement and Awards
The MCSC is launching a Youth Volunteer Movement in Michigan to encourage youth to be engaged in making a difference in their communities and the state. As part of the initiative, we are providing additional support through an online platform called InnerView for high school and college youth. It offers youth the opportunity to track volunteer hours and create a Service Resume to use when applying for employment and/or scholarships. The platform also allows youth to be eligible to receive awards from the State of Michigan and Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The grant application could be a great opportunity for your organization to participate in the Youth Volunteer Movement and launch InnverView in your community. The MCSC will work with your organization to provide this resource as part of your grant application.

Grant Funding Levels
$1,000 grant to engage 101 volunteers or more
$750 grant to engage 76 to 100 volunteers
$500 grant to engage 50 to 75 volunteers
$250 grant to engage 26 to 50 volunteers
$100 grant to engage up to 25 volunteers

Step One - Create the Project Plan to Address a Community Need
Projects should focus on one or more of following: disaster services, economic opportunity, environmental stewardship, education, healthy futures, equity and inclusion, and veterans and military families. Safety guidelines need to be followed to ensure all involved in the project are safe. All projects should follow Center for Disease Control and State of Michigan safety guidelines.

Step Two - Design a Project Budget
Provide your entire project budget and identify the supplies grant funds will purchase.  The grant should not be used for salaries, volunteer meals, and expensive equipment. It is recommended that you stretch your budget by asking volunteers to bring some of the equipment needed. (ex. rakes) If you are requesting items that can be reused, please list how they will be stored for future service.  Funds are reimbursed after the event when proof of expenses and project results are submitted. Awarded organizations must register as a vendor of the state to receive payment.

Grant Funding Selection
Funding is based on the quality of the project to meet community needs and for the project to create significant volunteer involvement. It is expected that there will be an emphasis on youth engagement at all levels of the activity from planning, coordinating and completing the project. Additionally, reviewers will evaluate applications based on use of partnerships, equitable geographic representation and adherence to COVID-19 safety guidelines.
