We’re always delighted to find volunteers to bring joy to the people we care for, and we’re especially excited to be launching an innovative program for kids aged 10 to 14 who’d like to visit an aged care resident alongside their parent, guardian, or other trusted adult.

Running during a school holiday period December to January in 2022/23, our intergenerational visiting program will provide an opportunity for social interaction between young and old. We seek to promote a positive view of ageing and create a sense of belonging and community in people of all ages.

Among the myriad of positive outcomes, a senior volunteer might enjoy are:

Benefits for older Australians
·       Reduced symptoms of depression due to isolation
·       Improved mood and increased cognitive capacity
·       Increased physical strength and mobility
·       Fostering intergenerational relationships.

Benefits for young adults and children
·       Learning new skills and improved communication skills
·       Positive attitudes in relation to ageing
·       Problem-solving abilities
·       Social networks and a sense of purpose

We are piloting this new program at our Chermside and Corinda aged care communities, and the number of families we can host will be strictly limited. If you’d like to be part of this rewarding opportunity, please register now to receive an upcoming information pack.

There are lots of other benefits to volunteering with us as well, such as:

·        Great education opportunities
·        Access to online and face-to-face wellness advisors
·        Free Flu Vaccinations
·        Invitations to social events
·        Being part of a team that really is making a difference in the lives of people in our local community.

The volunteering hours currently available for intergenerational volunteering are Monday to Friday between 9am till 3.30pm. Other hours can be organised if required. All our volunteers follow a COVID-19 safe work plan and provide proof they are up to date with their COVID-19 vaccinations before they are registered in their role.

Parents and guardians of children will also be required to have a current NDIS Workers Screening Clearance Card prior to commencement. This can be applied for through Wesley Mission Queensland at no cost to you.
