Predictably Irrational Book Study

The book and research by Dan Ariely, Predictably Irrational explains the hidden forces that drive how we make decisions. While these decisions are often far less rational than we think, once we know more about them they can help us stay on top of our finances, interact better with others and live happier lives.. Through this program financial professionals will gain knowledge of these forces and understanding of how to use that knowledge to help assist clients when it comes to the financial decisions they make. 
Join us for a six (6) week opportunity to apply what we learn in reading this book and applying it to working with clients in personal finance. Helping clients with everyday financial decisions, savings on autopilot, planning for purchases and investment decisions. The book and research by Dan Ariely, Predictably Irrational explains the hidden forces that really drive how we make decisions, which are far less rational than we think, but can help us stay on top of our finances, interact better with others and live happier lives, once we know about them. Through this self study program financial professionals will have knowledge that will help them work with clients when it comes to the decisions they make.

Small group discussion will be 30 minutes, followed by an optional 15 minute open discussion per week for the six weeks. Make up times are available. It is preferred you attend 5 out of the 6 weeks.

·       Week one – Chapter 1 - The Truth About Relativity; Chapter 2 - The Fallacy of Supply and Demand (54 pages)

·       Week two - Chapter 3 - The Cost of Zero Cost; Chapter 4 - The Cost of Social Norms (48 pages)

·       Week three - Chapter 5 - The Power of a Free Cookie; Chapter 7 - The Problem of Procrastination and Self-Control; Chapter 8 - The High Price of Ownership (60 pages) (not discussing Chapter 6 in small groups)

·       Week four - Chapter 9 - Keeping Doors Open; Chapter 10 - The Effect of Expectations (42 pages)

·       Week five - Chapter 11 - The Power of Price; Chapter 12 - The Cycle of Distrust and (44 pages)

·       Week six - Chapter 13 - The Context of Our Character, Part 1; Chapter 14 - The Context of Our Character, Part 2; Chapter 15, Beer and Free Lunches (51 pages)

TRACKING EDUCATION

There will be a survey monkey link sent to you at the end of the first week. This will be used to track your participation and credit for continuing education or experience hours.

With an average of 7 pages per day for the six week schedule, participants will answer open ended questions, as well as grade multiple choice questions each week using your specific survey monkey link. In order to receive continuing education attendees will complete the multiple choice questions with 70% or higher grade.

AFC Candidates - 11.25 under training category, 15 credits under book review (up to 26.25 experience hours)

FAQs
Make sure you are using the revised and expanded edition. It has 15 chapters. The original book had 13 chapters.
An additional make up will be available for the week of July 4th. That information will be emailed to all registered individuals.
You will be sent your group assignment and log in by May 31.
Feel free to read prior to the groups starting.
If you submitted Predictably Irrational credits in a previous two year reporting period, you can do it again for continuing education. If you reported it in your current two year reporting period, you will not be able to submit the credits, but we are still happy to have you join.
