Adverse Childhood Experiences

We want to know more about our community and about the issues we have dealt with. Once we have compiled all of the anonymous responses, the Juneau Suicide Prevention Coalition will present the information at the "ACES: Learn, Change, Prevent" conference at UAS on June 2 and 3.

The ACE study revealed there can be a direct link between childhood trauma and the adult onset of chronic disease. There are 10 types of childhood trauma measured in the ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) Study. Although there are many other types of childhood trauma, the ACE Study included only those 10 childhood traumas because those were mentioned as most common.

The most important thing to remember is that the ACE score is meant as a guideline: If you experienced other types of toxic stress over months or years, then those would likely increase your risk of health consequences.

Resiliency factors:
Fortunately, brains and lives are somewhat plastic. The appropriate integration of resilience factors born out of ACE concepts — such as asking for help, developing trusting relationships, forming a positive attitude, listening to feelings — can help people improve their lives. And we plan to discuss resiliency in the near future in the Juneau Empire. For now, though, please take a moment to answer these 13 questions.
