Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer at the Library of Congress!

Our volunteers play a vital role in daily activities at the Library. Please note that you must meet the following requirements in order to be qualified as a Library volunteer:

You must be 18 years or older.

You must be either a 1) U.S. Citizen, 2) Legal Permanent Resident, or 3) you must possess an appropriate visa (e.g., F-1/Student) in order to volunteer at the Library. You may indicate your status in the questionnaire below.

If you do not meet these requirements, we will not be able to accept your volunteer application. The next step in applying to become a volunteer is to complete the application below. If your answers to the questions are a match for our current needs, you will be contacted to schedule a virtual interview.

Please note that fingerprinting and a background check will be a necessary condition of your service as a volunteer, depending on the type of volunteer service you will provide and the kind of access you are granted to our facility. If you are selected for an interview, you will be provided additional information about this step in the onboarding process.

Volunteers are asked for an initial commitment of a minimum of three months of service, or 36 total hours, with the opportunity to extend service beyond the initial commitment.

Please note that we are currently accepting applications only for Information Desk and Greeter/Ticket Taking volunteers. Applications for all other positions, including our docent role, will be not be available until 2023. Only current Information Desk and Greeter/Ticket Taking volunteers will be eligible to apply to become a docent in 2023.
