Every year, Canadians throw away more than 3 million tonnes of plastic waste. About one-third of the plastics used in Canada are for single-use items. Most of these are not recyclable and often end up as litter in our community or contamination in the blue box. In a recent survey, York Region residents expressed support for businesses taking action to reduce single-use items.

York Region and its local municipalities are working together to support businesses that wish to reduce their use of these items and help them prepare for the upcoming federal ban on several single-use plastics. An important first step is to understand how businesses currently use and distribute single-use items. Please complete our 10-minute survey. Your input will help York Region support businesses to transition away from single-use items, and will ensure that the experiences of business owners and managers are informing our approach.
