NALMA 2026 Workforce Study

Introduction

The National Aboriginal Lands Managers Association (NALMA), in partnership with Indigenous Services Canada (ISC), is conducting this national workforce study to understand better the past, present, and future of the land management profession. Your insights and experiences as a land management professional are essential to strengthening the Reserve Land and Environmental Management Program (RLEMP), improving available training and support, guiding the ongoing redesign of the Professional Land Management Certification Program (PLMCP), and supporting NALMA’s long-term strategic planning. The information gathered will help identify current and emerging workforce needs and ensure that tools, training, and programs remain relevant, effective, and community-driven.

Your participation and responses will remain confidential. While your name or contact information may be collected as part of the survey, this information will only be used by NALMA’s Professional Development Unit and the project evaluation team to support analysis and follow-up where necessary. No individual survey responses will be shared with your employer, Chief and Council, ISC regional offices, or any other external parties. Any reporting from this study will present only aggregated findings; no individuals or communities will be identified in any reports. Open-ended responses will be reviewed and, if needed, edited to remove identifying details before analysis or reporting.

Survey data will be securely stored through SurveyMonkey and accessed only by NALMA’s Professional Development Unit and the evaluation team supporting this project. ISC program representatives will have access only to aggregated, de-identified results to support program development. Your information will not be used for funding decisions, performance evaluations, or compliance monitoring.

This survey will take approximately 25–30 minutes to complete, and participation is voluntary. You may stop the study at any time without consequence. To thank you for your participation, NALMA is offering five prize packages, each consisting of a $1,000 contribution to your First Nation’s Lands Department and a $200 Visa gift card for the respondent. To be entered into the prize draw, you must complete the survey in its entirety. You may choose to enter your name into the prize draw at the end of the survey. Prize entry is optional and does not affect your participation or confidentiality.

If you have any questions about the survey or how your information will be used, please contact Sherry Matson, Director of the Professional Development Unit, at smattson@nalma.ca. Thank you for supporting this important national workforce study and contributing to the future of land management across Canada.
