Application for Fiscal Year 2025-26

To help mitigate wildfire risks, CIS is once again offering a Wildfire Mitigation Grant. Members with CIS property coverage can apply for one reimbursement of up to $10,000.

Grants will be awarded based on the quality of the application and the expressed need of the member. Applications will be accepted through Sept. 30, 2025, or until funds are depleted.
GRANT CRITERIA
CIS Property coverage members may apply for a reimbursable grant of up to $10,000.

Five members will be selected to receive funding. CIS will evaluate applications based on need and the degree to which the project reduces wildfire risk for the member and the CIS Pool. Funds are limited, and not all approved applications may receive the full $10,000.

All CIS grants require pre-approval by the Risk Management Director or their designee and are reimbursement-only grants.

For questions about the grant program, contact CIS Senior Risk and Emergency Management Consultant Katie Durfee.

Eligible projects include:
  • Hiring an arborist to cut large branches or trees away from facilities to provide a fire break
  • Hiring a landscape contractor to cut brush, shrubs or ladder fuels to create fuel breaks, or to replace wood mulch with gravel
  • Hiring a landscape contractor to create defensible space around facilities and within 30 feet of outbuildings
  • Upgrading a roof to materials that meet Class A fire ratings; metal roofs are noncombustible and offer the highest level of fire resistance
  • Installing metal gutters or fire-resistant gutter guards and covers to reduce combustible buildup
  • Installing mesh screening over vent openings, made of noncombustible material with a 1/8-inch or smaller screen
  • Removing wood fencing and/or replacing fencing within 5 feet of buildings with noncombustible materials such as concrete, stone, masonry or metal
  • Replacing windows with fire-resistant materials such as tempered glass or multi-pane glass
  • Replacing exterior doors and frames with fire-resistant materials, including updating hardware to meet fire-resistance standards
  • Hiring a contractor to reduce dry vegetation or create wildfire breaks using goats (also known as goatscaping)
The grant application period is open now through Sept. 30, 2025. Members will be notified of award decisions no later than Nov. 3, 2025.

REIMBURSEMENT REQUIREMENTS
If approved, members must submit the following documentation by May 15, 2026, to receive reimbursement:
  • A copy of the original grant request
  • A copy of the grant approval notice
