7.Now, let's begin!

We have some questions about technology known as AI. We’re interested in hearing about your thoughts on this technology and how it should be used in healthcare settings.

First, some people feel AI has positive impacts on society, while others see it as having negative impacts on society.

On a 0 to 10 scale, where 0 is not positive at all, 10 is extremely positive, and 5 is in the middle, to what degree do you think AI has positive impacts on …

9.Have you ever used ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or similar AI chatbots?
10.Now, we’re going to ask you some questions about how AI could be used in healthcare settings. Not everyone has thought much about these, so if you don’t have an opinion or haven’t thought much about it, please feel free to say ‘don't know’.

First, we have some questions about how physicians and everyday people, like yourself, could use AI in healthcare settings.

On a 0 to 10 scale, where 0 is strongly oppose, 10 is strongly support, and 5 is in the middle, how strongly would you oppose or support the following?

It is okay for young people to trust AI as a dependable tool that provides helpful advice and information.
It is okay for young people to form companionships with AI, seeing it as a kind of companion or friend.
AI should be able to provide social advice to help young people understand themselves (e.g., self-awareness, identity, how one behaves in social situations, etc.).
AI should be able to provide social advice to help young people understand others (e.g., interpreting others’ thoughts, feelings, actions, etc.)
AI should be able to provide social advice to help young people manage friend/family relationships (e.g., deciding how to interact with friends/family, etc.).
AI should be able to provide social advice to help young people manage romantic relationships (e.g., deciding how to interact with romantic partners, etc.).
Schools should provide guidelines and resources to teach students how to use AI responsibly
11.On a different 0 to 10 scale, where 0 is strongly disagree and 10 is strongly agree, how strongly would you disagree or agree with the following statements?

AI replicate biases that exist in the data they were trained on.
AI may misinterpret user questions or provide incorrect responses based on imperfect or incomplete data.
AI require users to provide their questions and other personal information, which raise concerns about privacy and data security.
AI sometimes write believable but incorrect or nonsensical answers.
AI increase the spread of fake news and information.
AI are helping people become more creative.
People will feel less lonely with AI chatbots.
Even the smallest risk of AI causing harm to youth means AI should not be used with young people.
12.Now, here are some questions about you.

On the same 0 to 10 scale, to what extent do you disagree or agree with the following statements?

I have opinions about these issues that are worth listening to.
Other people’s opinions about these issues are worth listening to.
13.Next, we'd like to get your feelings toward some companies, people, and institutions, using what is sometimes called a "feeling thermometer." Ratings between 50 degrees and 100 degrees mean that you feel favorable and warm toward a party or person or institution. Ratings between 0 degrees and 50 degrees mean that you don't feel favorable, that you don't care too much for that person. You would rate the person at the 50-degree mark if you don't feel particularly warm or cold. If you don't know the party, person, or institution well enough to rate, just say "no opinion."

15.Now we’d like you to think about the people who disagree strongly with you on the issues we’ve been asking you about. How strongly would you disagree or agree with the following statements?

They just don’t know enough.
They believe some things that are untrue.
They are not thinking clearly.
They have good reasons; there just are better ones on the other side.
They are looking out for their own interests.
I respect their point of view even though it is different from mine.
It is hopeless to reach an agreement with them.
I would be willing to compromise to find a solution we both can support.
16.Now here are some factual questions to which not everyone may know the right answers. Please note only one answer is correct. If you come to a question to which you don’t know the answer, don’t worry about it. Just select “don’t know” and move on to the next one.

Which of the following is the best description of an AI system?
17.Which of the following are limitations of generative AI?
18.When AI have hallucinations, it means the following:
19.When an AI chatbot writes a reply, what's the best way to describe how it actually comes up with the words?
20.Which of the following describes how AI models learn?
21.Finally, just a few more questions about you.

What is the highest level of education that you have completed?
22.What region are you from?
23.In what year were you born?
24.Do you live in an urban, suburban, or rural area?
25.What is the gender you identify with?
26.What is your occupation?
27.What is your sexuality? Select all that apply
28.That's all! Should you have any questions, please share below or write to deliberation@stanford.edu.
