This page provides background information on The United States Conference of Mayors' DollarWise Summer Youth Campaign grants.
In summer 2009, The United States Conference of Mayors’ DollarWise Campaign launched its Summer Youth Campaign (SYC). Through the DollarWise SYC, mayors across the country are invited to incorporate a financial education component into their cities’ summer youth or year-round youth programs.

For summer 2018, DollarWise will award two cities with $10,000 grant awards. These grants will support efforts to help youth in summer programs learn how to responsibly manage their money.

*Important - one grant will be awarded to a city that offers financial education training to youth over the summer, and one grant will be awarded to a city that provides financial education year-round.

Summer and year-round youth programs are encouraged—but not required—to seek local matching funds.

Only member cities of The U.S. Conference of Mayors are eligible to receive a Summer Youth Campaign Grant. To inquire about your city's membership, please contact Assistant Executive Director of Membership Debra DeHaney-Howard at: ddehaney@usmayors.org.

If you or your staff have any questions about the Summer Youth Campaign Grants Program or the application process, please contact James Kirby, Manager of the DollarWise Campaign, at (202) 861-6759 or at jkirby@usmayors.org. Please visit our website for more information: www.usmayors.org/dollarwise
PURPOSES OF DOLLARWISE SUMMER AND YEAR-ROUND YOUTH PROGRAM GRANTS

Through these grants, DollarWise seeks to encourage the incorporation of financial education into summer and year-round youth programs. Specifically, DollarWise will fund efforts that develop programs to:

  • Provide incentives that encourage summer or year-round youth to participate in and complete a financial education curriculum, such as the DollarWise Summer Youth Contest;
  • Motivate youth to reach summer or year-round savings goals;
  • Evaluate summer or year-round financial education efforts for youth;
  • Encourage businesses that support/sponsor youth for the summer or year-round to provide financial education opportunities;
  • Encourage cities and nonprofits to provide financial education into their summer or year-round programs.
SELECTION CRITERIA

Emphasis will be placed on programs that provide innovative approaches to expanding the financial capabilities of youth, including but not limited to financial planning for post secondary education, establishing and managing savings/checking accounts, or an additional category of financial capability - or the integration of financial literacy programs into workforce development youth programming.

Applicants are encouraged to explore partnerships with other local non-profit organizations or coalitions to connect with and educate youth.

Summer and year-round programs selected to receive a grant will show:

  • Innovation in efforts to incorporate financial education into summer or year-round youth programming.
  • Engagement and involvement of community resources.
  • A high level of commitment to incorporating financial education into the summer or year-round programming, including private and nonprofit sector firms that hire youth through the city’s youth programs.
