Consent to Participate in a Research Study

Introduction:
The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) is conducting research to evaluate the Young Clergy Initiative (YCI), a fund that has the goal of increasing the number of young clergy within The United Methodist Church. We are interested in learning more about the outcomes of grants funded by the YCI. You are being asked to participate in this research study because you are participating in a YCI-funded project.

Procedures:
If you agree to participate in this study, you will be asked to complete two online surveys: one before your YCI project or shortly after beginning and one after. Each survey should take no more than 10 minutes to complete. During the surveys, you will be asked about your attitudes, behaviors, and intentions related to ordained ministry.

Risks, Benefits and the Voluntary Nature of Participation:
There are no known risks or discomforts associated with this study. Your participation is voluntary. You are free to skip any questions you do not want to answer or stop participating in the survey at any time. Your decision not to participate, to skip questions, or to stop your participation will not result in any loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled. There are also no direct benefits to you for your participation in this study. However, your responses will help GBHEM learn more about the impact of the YCI and make future improvements.

Confidentiality and Use of Data:
To help us protect your privacy and ensure confidentiality, please do not include any private or identifying information in your responses. Results of this study (including your exact responses/text) may be used in internal and external reports, publications, presentations, websites or other promotional materials. But, in any of those use cases, your responses will not be directly linked to you.

Opportunity to Ask Questions:
If you have any questions about this study, you may contact GBHEM’s Research and Evaluation Sr. Specialist, Dr. Kyle Bush at kbush@gbhem.org or (615) 340-7408. If you have questions about the Young Clergy Initiative, you may contact Trip Lowery at tlowery@gbhem.org.

I have read the information above (or had it read to me). I have had the opportunity to ask questions about it and any questions I asked have been answered to my satisfaction.
