INTRODUCTION

Dear teacher,

We invite you to complete the first ever Survey for Teaching Personnel on Inclusion and Diversity, which is being jointly coordinated by Education International Asia-Pacific Region and UNESCO Bangkok for members of EI-affiliated unions in the Asia-Pacific Region.

The survey is part of the joint EI and UNESCO program entitled Teachers for Inclusion: Embracing diversity and promoting safe schools which is supported by UNDPs Being LGBTI in Asia and Pacific regional programme. The survey objectives are to: assess the knowledge and attitudes of EI members on gender and sexual orientation and gender identity and expression (SOGIE) rights; gather teachers’ perspectives on their role in addressing SOGIE-based discrimination; and identify the policy-level enablers and obstacles to address challenges related to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) rights in the education sector. The proposed survey is designed to inform EI, Ministries of Education (MoE), and international/local stakeholders who work to make the education sector safe and inclusive for all learners.

EI and its affiliates will use the survey findings to conduct focused advocacy to promote inclusive education and safe schools and to advance LGBT rights. Cross-country data will enable us to identify the common needs arising from different challenges at the local, national and regional levels, and to explore policy and programme responses to these issues.

In order for us to achieve the intended objectives, we seek your support in completing the survey and encouraging other teachers to complete the survey. The findings of the survey will be published as a report, which will be shared widely with EI affiliates and their members.

The survey is designed to take 15–20 minutes to complete and is available in English, Hindi and Nepali languages. The survey may be completed using computers, laptops, smartphones or tablets.

As your privacy is important to us, we will not ask for your name, your phone number, your address or any other personal information that could be used to identify who you are.

Please complete the survey on or before 10 January 2019 Should you face any technical difficulties in the completion of this survey or any other questions arise, please contact EIAP Regional Office at eiap@ei-ie.org or +6 03 2284 2140, +6 03 2284 2142. Curtin University Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) has approved this study (HREC number HRE2018-0745).

Thank you for your valuable support in completing the survey.
