Background & Context

On June 25, 2018, the Boards of Directors of the YMCA of Western Ontario and the YMCAs across Southwestern Ontario decided, after completing a successful business planning process to merge the two associations into one larger regional YMCA – to be named the YMCA of Southwestern Ontario - serving Windsor in the West, North to Goderich, South to Point Pelee National Park, East to Woodstock.

As part of becoming one YMCA, a new Board of Directors will be selected from current Board members from each YMCA and potentially a few new board members.  

These statements will guide the unified YMCA:

Vision: Together, our YMCA will be a recognized leader in building healthy communities

Mission: We are dedicated to the enrichment of our communities through growth in spirit, mind, and body for people of all backgrounds, beliefs, and abilities

Values: 
CARING - we can be trusted to do the right thing. 
HONESTY - we keep our promises, and do what we say we will. 
RESPECT - we believe in the good within people.  
RESPONSIBILITY - we are leaders, and set an example for others. 
INCLUSIVENESS - we create a place for everyone at the YMCA

Taking into account the current governance structures of the two Boards a Governance Board is recommended.  This Board would function distinctly from operations.  A strong partnership is developed between the CEO and the Chair of the Board. 

Responsibilities to include:
•       Establish and implement the organization’s purpose
•       Set the rate of progress the organization will undertake in achieving its mission
•       Provide continuity for the governance
•       Provide continuity for the oversight of the organizations affairs
•       Confirm the organization’s identity within the community
•       The CEO is accountable to the Board through the Terms of Reference
•       Working as a whole with one voice.
