The Swansea Compton's Corner Green Space Retrofit and Water Quality Project

https://srpedd.org/environment/watershed-planning/comptons-corner-stormwater/

The Town of Swansea has been working with Save the Bay, Southeast New England Program Network [SNEP Network], Southeast Regional Planning and Economic Development District [SRPEDD], and Coastal Zone Management through the Energy and Environmental Affairs office of the State of Massachusetts. This is a two-year project that aims to improve Compton's Corner stormwater drainage and filtration.

This project is divided into two parts:

The first is working with the UMass SMAST at the New Bedford facility to perform water quality testing at four stormwater outfalls that drain into Compton's Corner and then into Mt. Hope Bay. We are going to perform three tests during rainfall events in the next few months (until June 2025) to find out the levels of contaminants that are flowing into and degrading the bay.

The second part will be taking that information from water quality testing and mapping potential properties already owned by the Town of Swansea in the Compton's Corner neighborhood to create water filtering and new uses for properties that receive rainfall. We are asking neighbors of the area to tell us what they would like to see incorporated into those property retrofits. Because the town is already going to change the use of those public properties, we want to make them accessible to the public and provide the recreation that residents want in their own neighborhood. Please fill out the information below so we can make Swansea's Compton's Corner better for the environment and its residents.
