1. What's on your reading list this fall?

For some, reading is a summer affair, but many associate September with back-to-school and a stack of books. Whether you read to brush up on some aspect of industry knowledge or for pleasure, there’s something to please every taste.

Here’s what Edmund F. Murphy III, president of Empower Retirement, is reading this autumn: “Boys in the Boat,” by Daniel James Brown. “This is a really inspiring story about determination, team work, and what it takes to win,” he tells PLANADVISER.

The book made it onto more than one list. Tim Noonan, managing director, capital markets insights, Russell Investments, says he sees a lot of people reading it. “It’s an amazing story about teamwork and grit, which is indirectly a morality tale about how spoiled we’ve all become,” he says. Noonan says fall is his time to re-read Hemingway, and he is now deep into “Islands in the Spring,” which, he says, has an incredible quote that perfectly sums up the August market volatility—a month when nothing is supposed to happen.  “… the true hurricane months have fine weather when there are no storms.”
