Background
ABOUT ACADEMY OF SCIENCES MALAYSIA
The Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) is a ‘Think Tank’ of the nation for matters related to science, engineering, technology and innovation. ASM strives to promote and foster the development of science, engineering and technology (SET). The Academy also promotes national awareness, understanding and appreciation of the role of science, engineering and technology in human progress.
In line with this, ASM identifies developments in SET and bring such developments to the attention of the Government through advisory reports, papers or other documents and make the necessary recommendations to the Government
ABOUT ASM’S PRECISION MEDICINE INITIATIVE FOR MALAYSIA
The Precision Medicine Initiative for Malaysia was approved by an internal process of ASM in September 2017. This initiative is chaired by Professor Datuk Dr A Rahman A Jamal FASc.
This Initiative aims to generate evidence of precision medicine’s effectiveness; data-sharing and related infrastructure; integrating a precision medicine approach into clinical practice; new approaches to regulation, pricing and reimbursement for diagnostics and treatment; and, patient and public engagement.
DEFINITION OF PRECISION MEDICINE Precision Medicine is an approach for disease treatment and prevention that takes into account individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle for each person (National Institute of Health, US 2015).
Specifically, it is the principle of tailoring medical treatment to the individual characteristics of each patient to classify individuals into subpopulations that differ in their susceptibility to a particular disease or their response to a specific treatment, allowing preventative or therapeutic interventions to be concentrated on those who will benefit, sparing expense and side effects for those who will not (National Research Institute, US 2011)
OBJECTIVE OF THE SURVEY
This survey is intended to include information on precision medicine related services at institutional level. The collection and aggregation of existing data and sources will then be used to establish an inventory which will lead to a more concerted effort at the National level.
We trust this survey will be of significant value for all relevant stakeholders and participants.
