NAESP is currently deciding on topics and themes to address in Principal magazine for the 2018 – 2019 school year. Please take a few moments to answer the questions below, letting us know how to better serve NAESP members.

* On a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being the most interesting and 1 the least, how would you rate the following potential themes for Principal magazine?

SEL and Mental Health Supports – Ensuring that all students receive a well-rounded and complete education is a foundational element of the Every Student Succeeds Act. In addition to broadening the curriculum, this issue will take up topics such as adverse childhood experiences like mental illness, divorce, and incarceration; trauma informed practices; and measuring social-emotional learning.
Effective Math Instruction – This article will shine a light on various aspects of math instruction, from the latest research to best teaching practices, standards of learning, access and equity, and assessments.
Engagement – Research proves that parent engagement can positively impact student achievement. Educators, too, must be engaged to do their best. Articles will focus on teacher engagement, and the significant role schools play in the type and level of parent engagement, addressing wrap around services, afterschool and summer learning, family and parenting trends, and communicating about standards and assessments.
Assessment and Feedback – This issue will review student assessments as a tool to teaching and learning. It will also focus on best practices for teacher evaluation and feedback.
Safe & Healthy Schools – Students deserve schools that are safe learning environments. Topics in this issue will address bullying and violence prevention, school security, responding to a crisis, and all aspects of student wellness.
Alignment – This issue will shine a light on middle-level education, especially as it relates to student leadership, transitions from the elementary – and to the secondary level, and aligning curriculum with the elementary level. Articles also can address keeping parents engaged.
Recruiting & Retaining Teachers – This issue will address preparation, induction, and support for new teachers, as well as working conditions that contribute to high levels of teaching success. Articles can also address teacher shortages and the special challenges of teachers of color.
