Welcome

This Step
Wrapping up your business idea in a single sentence to get potential customers and partners excited can be a lot harder than it sounds. The Customer Value Proposition Explorer helps you to define who your product is for, what they value and what they need. The Explorer asks you a series of questions to:
  • Define who your customer is
  • Understand how your customer thinks, thinking about how they need the product to work, how they feel and how they want to be seen by others
  • Concisely describe your products and services
The Explorer will take approximately 20 - 30 mins to complete.

Why It Is Important
A great customer value proposition is what makes your business idea real. It's about being able to explain what you do, who you do it for and why over and over again in a way that excites and motivates. Imagine all of the conversations that you are about to have with potential customers, suppliers, partners, investors and potential new hires about why they want to be involved. You totally need this.
How It Works
The tool is broken into four different sections.
  • Section A: Identifying your customer. This is split into two different parts based on whether you are targeting businesses or end consumers.
  • Section B: Understanding your customer. This is split into four separate parts - what this customer segment is trying to achieve; what this customer segment wants to avoid; what this customer segment really wants and potential competitors.
  • Section C: Describing your products and services. This is split into two key parts – understanding how your business will create value for customers and defining the products and services that you will offer.
  • Section D: Customer Value Proposition Generator. The Explorer tool then pulls together key answers from earlier sections into a single statement. A separate text box has been provided below for you to further refine your statement once summarised.
We use Popeye at key points in the Explorer to spark your thinking about the connections between customers, products, product features and customer benefits.

Before You Start
Understanding your customer is best informed by data. Unlike an existing company, you are unlikely to have years of customer information at your fingertips. Before starting the Explorer, you may want to find out more about your potential customers through things like:
  • Google trends – get a feel for what is popular
  • Industry research –  limited number of industry guides published by the Australian government; more comprehensive industry reports (e.g. IBISWorld; Euromonitor) are typically available your local library
  • Leverage your social networks
  • Survey or interview potential customers
