As union members, students, staff, faculty, and community, we say NO to UW’s proposed budget cuts, possible layoffs, and further consolidation of essential staff positions!
We understand that Washington faces a state budget deficit on top of federal funding cuts to higher education. But we also know that UW has more than enough cash in its endowment and is actively recruiting funds for a new chemistry building. According to a UW Bridges Center report from March 2025, "UW remains financially sound with close to $1.5 billion in unrestricted reserves." Times like these require proactive solutions in order to fund crucial research and preserve staffing levels.
We urge you to use the funds you have -- including reserves -- to avoid devastating staffing cuts. Don’t balance devastating cuts on the backs of the very workers who make UW the world-class institution it is! We demand a creative, alternative strategies that utilize UW's vast existing resources, prioritize jobs, and protect the important work of the University: no layoffs, no furloughs, and no cuts!
