LEADERSHIP RESEARCH: TASK-TYPE WORK-TIME SURVEY

This survey is designed to gather specific information on leadership roles in the U.S. Navy, as well as data on how well the Navy prepares its personnel to assume greater leadership responsibilities upon promotion to more senior grades.

The questions in this survey ask you to consider 3 types of tasks:

1. Technical: Tasks that require you to actually work with equipment or to directly supervise others who are working with equipment. Examples include operating radar, trouble-shooting an electrical fault, supervising the loading/un-loading of supplies.
2. Managerial: Tasks that require you to plan and organize the use of resources. Examples include identifying individuals to man working groups, preparing inputs for evaluations, drafting material condition reports.
3. Leadership: Tasks that require you to develop subordinates, to arouse commitment in others, or to communicate clear standards and expectations. Examples include maintaining morale, enforcing standards, and acting as a role model.

The survey asks for your feedback about these types of tasks in three areas:

1. The time YOU spend on these types of tasks, now and in your previous grades.
2. The time you think OTHERS spend on these types of tasks.
3. Your opinion of how well the Navy has prepared YOU to perform each of these types of tasks.

Your responses to this survey are EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to CPPD, as they will be used to evaluate and improve the current leadership training now being delivered at the command level. This survey is your opportunity to take positive steps to INFLUENCE the QUALITY and CONTENT of any future leadership courses that may be developed by CPPD, thereby making a lasting contribution to leadership training and development in the U.S. Navy.
